What Is Tagatose?

Tagatose is a natural and rare sugar found in small amounts in fruits, cacao, and dairy products. Tagatose has a similar taste to sugar and is about 75-92% as sweet as sugar while its glycemic index is very low (GI 3). Glucose has a GI of 100, while common table sugar has a GI of 68.

Tagatose has been shown in studies to reduce blood glucose levels in the liver by promoting a glucokinase activity which promotes the transfer of glucose to glycogen. It has also been shown to inhibit digestive enzymes in the small intestines which results in carbohydrates not being absorbed in the human body. Clinical studies have also shown that tagatose significantly reduces blood glucose levels in healthy individuals. The Antihyperglycemic function is important for those with both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes, especially because diabetes is continuously growing and spreading to the younger generation.

Is there any side effects of consuming tagatose? In some individuals who are sensitive to fructose, there has been some mild nausea, flatulence and diarrhea reported when consumed in excess of 15 grams per meal, due to the fiber nature of tagatose. Most individuals have been able to consume up to 45 grams with no side effects. Our blend, used in the caramels, has about 11 grams of tagatose per serving.

What does all this science mean for the candies at Curly Girlz Candy? It means we’ve reduced the amount of sugar alcohols in our sweetener blend, reduced the amount of IMO Syrup, but created a better tasting and better for you candy. You can enjoy 100% indulgence with 0% of the guilt.
